Black Powder Coffee is a local family-owned coffee roaster and woman-owned small business. 

The Stahlman's are a family of four who lives in Mooresville, North Carolina. Melissa Stahlman, CEO, and President leads the company after years of volunteering and prior corporate roles in marketing and the legal field. 

Dave and Melissa Stahlman are the owners, roasters, and coffee enthusiasts. After purchasing a 1 kg roaster in 2011, they experimented with single-origin coffee beans to determine the optimal roast level and process. 

They formed an LLC in 2014 and increased their capacity and quality by purchasing a San Franciscan SF25 gas roaster. Based on customer feedback, they know they've created something special with fresh micro-roasted coffee with distinct flavors and quality.

Truly great coffee starts with the world's finest, super-hard beans, grown at high elevations with cold nights to allow crops to mature slowly for a more intense flavor profile. These premium beans account for less than 5% of all coffee grown worldwide. 

They can hand-select only single-source, fair-trade, or rain forest-certified beans harvested with minimal ecological impact and ethical work practices because they focus on small-batch roasting rather than mass production. So that you can feel good after each cup.

Their green beans are kept in a climate-controlled warehouse. They normally do not mix their green beans before roasting because each origin requires special care in the roaster €“ they blend after roasting.

Their roasting process is gentle and meticulous in order to extract the most flavor from the single-origin bean. They do combine a few origins to create an artist's palette of flavors to create a wonderful blend. 

In 2016, Black Powder added Artisan software for roast profiling via a Raspberry Pi to better document and repeat the unique roast styles developed as a hobbyist at home over years.
